Half Term family activities in Salcombe for all ages
Whether it’s a day trip, a long weekend or you’re heading down our way for an October half Term week, here’s our pick of the fab family activities in Salcombe & the South Hams you can look forward to this Autumn!

1) History comes alive at Salcombe Maritime Museum
Salcombe Maritime Museum A treasure trove of models, paintings, photographs and artefacts which tell the story of Salcombe’s links with ships and the sea from ancient times to the Second World War. There is plenty to amuse and engage younger visitors including hands-on displays, models and pirates’ treasure, in the ‘young sailors’ corner’. The Museum is open daily from up until October 31st between 10.30am – 12.30pm & 2.30pm – 4.30pm. Adults: £2.00, Young people under 18: 50p, Children under 12: free
2) Perfect places for creative kids
Kidz & Co Soft Play Café is a fab place for your little ones, whatever the weather! Their soft play area is packed with fun for 0 to 7 year olds and they serve food all day long, seven days a week 9am-5pm. Perfect!
3) South West Coast Path Wanderings
We knew it already of course but the South West Coast Path has recently clinched the top spot in a survey to find Britain’s best-loved walk!
So whether you’ve heard of the South West Coastal Path already or you’ve previously experienced it’s sheer rugged-coastline beauty, take your kids on an invigorating escapade to experience our incredible coastline and rolling Devon landscapes – find out more in our South West Coast Path Guide. The walk up to Bolt Head is one that you and the kids will love – not too far from Salcombe yet rugged and sea-breezy…the ocean opens up before you!
4) Feel the heat
South Devon Chilli Farm are open all year round from 10am – 4.30pm (except Xmas holiday period) and are a must-visit place when in the area. Free Entry, Free samples every day, free tours (seasonal), a wonderful shop and Cafe, Fresh chillies for sale (usually, June – Nov) and an amazing Display tunnel (usually open, May – Dec)…need we say more?!
5) Gin & Ice Cream!
Your little ones shouldn’t have all the fun, so a visit to the Boathouse should be in order if Granny & Grandpa or friends can look after your little ones for a few hours.
It’s the home of Salcombe Distillery Co. where their beautiful distillery and bar are nestled in the traditional boat building quarter of Salcombe, Island Street, now also renowned for its growing arts scene. Why not join them for a drink and watch Salcombe gin distillation in action on their beautiful 450l copper still provident, or admire the view over the water from their bar’s balcony.
If you have little ones in tow then head past Salcombe Gin to the amazing Salcombe Dairy for a dollop or two of ice cream you will NOT forget! It probably has something to do with their philosophy of almost 30 years “create a sumptuous recipe and use only the finest natural ingredients to make the highest quality, award winning dairy ice creams, premium sorbets and luxury crushes. Quality without compromise…”!
The only thing to add is that the honeycombe is divine!
6) Piggy Fun at Pennywell Farm
Pigs, ponies and plenty of pumpkins will be kicking off the October Half Term fun at Pennywell Farm (Mon 23 to Sun 29 Oct). There is an action packed day lined up with hundreds of friendly animals to meet, a different hands on activity or show every half hour and four farm rides included in the admission price. We’ll also throw in a pumpkin for you to carve and take home so you can leave all the mess behind!
7) Forest & Beach Adventures
From Half Term Forest Days with Archery or Mallet Making to their Canoe Adventure Day, Forest & Beach Adventures have it all going on for your kids this October Half Term. Their daily camps mean you can drop your children (primary aged to 14years+) off for the day, knowing they are in safe hands having the time of their lives, learning new skills and making new friends in our great outdoors. 8) Discover the rejuvenator!
National Trust property Overbecks is an exotic and fascinating hidden paradise perched high on the cliffs above Salcombe. It’s one of our favourite family activities in Salcombe and makes for the perfect day out for young adventurers or keen gardeners who want to be inspired and excited.
Explore the banana garden, meander through the woodland, or relax beneath the palms and soak up the spectacular panorama across miles of beautiful coastline and estuary. Continue your journey of discovery into the Edwardian seaside home of eccentric scientist Otto Overbeck. See his amazing invention: the ‘rejuvenator’; hear the polyphon, a giant Victorian music box; and be intrigued by the eclectic collections of natural and maritime history. Open daily from 11 February to 29 October 2017 from 11am to 5pm.
9) Marty the monster is back!
Come and meet Marty the friendly monster in Marty’s Monster Manor at Woodlands Theme Park!
Your kids will experience mysterious surprises around every eerie corner. Muster up your courage and enter Marty’s Manor but first, you will need to trek through the creepy cave. 10) Swallows & Amazons…time on the water for all ages
Salcombe Dinghy Sailing is a family run business with a dedicated team that’s all about making sure you have the best experience possible. Ross and Zoe Crook have a combined 27 years experience in the Sailing industry and are on the water from March to November everyday from 10:00 to 17:00. If you fancy walking on waves then Bantham Surfing Academy is for you. Their supervised surfing sessions & Kids club are run by highly experienced and British Surfing Association qualified instructors who provide professional tuition and coaching for beginners through to elite levels.
Discovery Surf School is another option and family run in the beautiful setting of Bigbury on Sea. Their Discovery Surf Camps are legendary among parents, taking place 10am-4pm Monday to Thursdays where you can drop your children off in the morning, allowing you to take some time for yourselves whicle the kids has a totally rad time on the board dude!
11) Target practice at Salcombe Shooting School
Salcombe Shooting School gives you the opportunity to find out and test your skills on the new Air Rifle Target Range. Once you get ‘zeroed in’ there are a series of interesting animal knock down targets and the more challenging moving target system to see how good you really are, all in a safe controlled environment under the supervision on an Instructor at all times. No experience needed and fun for the whole family!
