South West Coast Path is Britain’s best-loved walk!
We knew it already of course but the South West Coast Path has clinched the top spot in a survey to find Britain’s best-loved walk!
The National Express surveyed 1,000 British walkers on their favourite routes and we beat the Lake District’s Windermere Way into second, while Scotland’s Great Glen Way came third despite its panoramas of Loch Ness, among other highland scenery.
So whether you’ve heard of the South West Coastal Path already or you’ve previously experienced it’s sheer rugged-coastline beauty, this title surely means the next walking holiday you take HAS to be in our neck of the woods to experience our incredible coastline and rolling Devon landscapes?!?
Get your South West Coast Path walking boots on!
The footpath – which is England’s longest – stretches for 630 miles, running from Minehead in Somerset, along the coasts of Devon and Cornwall, to Poole Harbour in Dorset. It was originally created by coastguards, patrolling the south west peninsula looking out for smugglers, where they literally had to check in every inlet so their cliff top walk was well used and gives us the amazing Path we use today. The Path has also been used by fishermen looking for shoals of fish and checking the sea conditions.
So not only does the path skirt the most fantastic coastal landscapes, but it also weaves its way through The South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’s 60 glorious miles of coastline, estuaries and countryside between Plymouth and Torbay.
Rest your feet in Salcombe!
Luckily for everyone enjoying the Path, it cuts right through the heart of Salcombe, offering some of the most stunning out-and-back routes should you base yourself in the Town. Or if you’re looking to bag plenty of miles then we’d heartily encourage you to overnight in Salcombe on your way through.
The South West Coast Path website is the best place to plot your South Devon walking route’s that either go through, or start from Salcombe and take-in the lovely surrounding areas to the West such as Bolt Head, Soar Mill, Hope Cove, Bigbury on Sea and Bantham. Or take the 2 minute ferry ride across to East Portlemouth and head South East towards East Prawl and Start Point, past incredible landscapes and beaches including Gara Rock.
Phew…sounds like hard work so if, like us, you simply opt to explore new places such as Salcombe and the South Hams at a more sedate pace (we don’t blame you!) then these will be some of the most rewarding miles you and your boots will enjoy!
