No1 Place Where We Summer by Jack Wills
No 1. Salcombe, Devon, England
The original. The first. This is where it all began, 17 years ago. Our first store opened here in 1999 and Salcombe sums up who we are. Full of character and charm (and charming characters), the town’s beaches, bars and boats keep people coming back summer after summer.
DO SAY that you’ve already signed the ceiling at Island Street Bar & Grill.
DON’T SAY “It’s no match for Padstow”
WHAT TO WEAR Your favourite rugby or polo shirt, shorts and well-worn deck shoes will see you through from mornings on the water to evenings at The Ferry Inn. Just don’t leave your life jacket on when you walk into town.
BEST VANTAGE POINT Cliff House, home of Salcombe Yacht Club.
WHERE TO STAY If you’re feeling indulgent, the Salcombe Harbour Hotel & Spa – complimentary gin in every room, White Company toiletries and a short stroll from Jack Wills. What’s not to love?
DIARY DATE Salcombe Town Regatta (31st July until 6th August) is an eclectic mix of all things nautical, from yacht and boat races by day to torch-lit processions at night. Join the party in any pub on the waterfront.
WHO YOU MIGHT SEE Some members of Led Zeppelin, England’s World Cup-winning coach Sir Clive Woodward and baking queen Mary Berry. FYI – it’s cream before jam on scones this side of the Cornish border. Wars have been fought over less.
WHAT TO EAT The morning after the night before, head for breakfast and a coffee at the Winking Prawn or Captain Morgan’s.
