Top 5 Winter Walks in the area

We love the local area, and many of the stunning walks are even more beautiful on a sunny winters day, where you often have the path to yourself, and amazing views of the quiet beaches and waters.

Mill Bay Beach to Gara Rock

Time: Around an hour

A lovely cliff top walk above the beaches where you can enjoy wonderful views back over towards Salcombe. It will take you around an hour to walk over the cliffs to Gara Rock, but there is a short cut back through the fields if you fancy an easier route home. If you are staying Salcombe side, hop on the ferry at low tide and enjoy the stroll to Mill Bay to start the journey. There is National Trust parking at Mill Bay Beach as well. At Gara Rock the newly refurbished hotel offers a cosy warm up spot complete with log burners, fur throws and hot chocolates!

Thurlestone to Hope Cove

Time: Around 40 minutes

After enjoying a lovely lunch at the Thurlestone Hotel why not head out for a walk? From the Thurlestone sands beach you have a wonderful long walk on the sandy stretch and then you can take the footpath across the cliff tops to Hope Cove. Enjoy stunning views out to sea and warm up once you reach Hope Cove at the cosy Cove Café or the lovely Cottage hotel. The walk will take you around 40 minutes depending on how long you spend taking in the fabulous views.

Town centre to North Sands

Time: Around 30 minutes

For those looking for a more gentle stroll, start your journey in the town centre and head down the stunning coastal road to North Sands Beach. Remember that you’ll need to time this with a low tide if you want to walk on the beach. Warm up with a hot drink at the Winking Prawn, or get a takeaway drink to enjoy on your walk back. This one should talk around 30 minutes.

South Sands to Stare Hole Bay

Time: Around 30 minutes

Start your journey at the gorgeous South Sands beach and head up the hill, past Overbeck’s gardens and museum to the coastal path. The coastal path here boasts beautiful views across to the beaches, but is rather steep and rocky in places so we recommend you wear walking shoes. When you reach stare hole say you’ll find a few spots to perch and enjoy the view. This walk takes around 30 minutes and is best in the morning when you have the sunshine on your side!

Soar Mill Cove to Salcombe

Time: Around 1 hour 30 minutes

For those looking for a more challenging walk this stunning route will give you a workout! It takes well over an hour but you will be rewarded by breath-taking views, and in the winter months often only a few others on the track. You’ll be likely to see lovely wildlife on the way and you can finish the hike at the South Sands hotel with a refreshing drink.

Enjoy your winter walks and remember to keep safe!
